War Dated Confederate Pass, Hilton Head to Folly Island

Partially Printed Document Signed, "J.J. Elwell", as Lieutenant Colonel and Chief Quartermaster, 1p, 7.75" x 3.5", Hilton Head, January 4, 1864. On Chief Quartermaster's Office stationery, the document is a pass for the bearer, George[?] Rowland, from Hilton Head to Folly Island in South Carolina. Verso is blank. Light soiling, scattered foxing, and minor creasing, else in near fine condition.

John Johnson Elwell (1820-1900) was a physician, attorney, and Union Army officer. Born in Ohio, he practiced medicine there after graduating from Cleveland Medical College in 1846. Elwell then served in the Ohio legislature from 1853 to 1855 and was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1855, where he practiced law in Cleveland. After the outbreak of the Civil War, Elwell was appointed quartermaster, equipping the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry of Cleveland, the 3rd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry of Huron County, and the Sherman Brigade. Elwell was promoted to lieutenant colonel, serving as chief quartermaster of the Department of the South until February 1, 1864, less than a month before he signed this document. Due to an illness from yellow fever, Elwell was removed to Elmira, New York, where he purchased horses for the cavalry and supplies for Elmira Prison. Elwell was breveted four times for gallantry in battle and received the Gillmore Medal for meritorious conduct.
