Description
The Civil War Begins April 12, 1861 Charleston, South Carolina
CIVIL WAR. Autograph Document Signed, "D. F. Jamison", April 12, 1861, on Department of War letterhead, Charleston, 1 p., 5" x 8", to Col. Edward Manigault. Docketed on verso, also April 12, 1861, "Notice that 5 Regiments had been ordered out."
Amazing "Special Order" signed by D. F. Jamison, South Carolina militia general and president of the Secession Conference, on rare War Dept. letterhead, and on the very day hostilities had opened in Charleston very early in the morning. While Columbia remained nominally the capital of South Carolina, the executive offices had moved to Charleston for the time being.
In full, "I have written to inform you that three additional Regiments of Volunteers have been ordered into Service, in this city and that two other regiments have been ordered to rendezvous at Columbia for the present. You are therefore ordered to make preparations for arming and equipping the said Regiments on their arrival here."
Further elaboration is not necessary. This is an on-the-scene memento of one of America's most historic days.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
