Hilakata Poncho, Lake Titicaca Region, Bolivia, 19th C.Vicuna fiber. This fine designatory poncho of the village headman made of the undyed fiber of the wild vicuna. Would have been worn with a vicuna fiber scarf, a silver and wood "baston de manda" staff, and perhaps a vicuna hat, this costume would identify the village male serving in the office of Hilakata, head political authority of the community. The body of the poncho is made from variations in select body hair while the white stripes come from yarns made of long and choice chest hair. Scattered small areas of damage with some old indigenous vicuna repairs. Size: 48'' x 61'', 122 x 155 cm (open).
