Description
Macha Aksu Woman's Overskirt, Macha, Department of Potosi, Bolivia, C.1900-1950. Wool fiber. A rare variant of the woman's festival skirt of the Macha tribe. The lower loom panel of the skirt features dense patterns of interlocking waves on the sacred diagonal, double headed serpents and waves which create pointed spear heads in the negative space. Andean indigenous design is very reciprocal and spiritually oriented, and the primary pre-European god was Viracocha which loosely translates as "seafoam". Note the small area of weaving termination indicating a skilled weaver. Good condition.
