Description
East Asia, Japan, Meiji Era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-built Satsuma ware vase covered in layers of painted pigment, gilding, and enamel overlays. The obverse depicts a seated female dignitary, perhaps an empress, flanked by a pair of male advisors, each wearing lengthy robes with dense enamel decorations. The side bars, shoulder, and foot are surrounded by gilt leaves, gold-colored enamel vines, and a cruciform wheel on top, and the verso bears a landscape with bird, water, hills, mountains, and a pair of tall trees in the middle. A partially illegible kanji signature is written in red beneath the foot, and a third kanji symbol is written in black on the foot surface itself. Satsuma ware vessels originated in the Satsuma region of Japan around the 16th century CE. Size: 5.4" W x 9.75" H (13.7 cm x 24.8 cm)
