Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful pair of lacquered wood boxes both of rectangular form with detachable lids and adorned with lustrous gilding. Enveloped in a vibrant hue of crimson, the more petite container features brass embellished corners and a brass handle tied with a green and gold tassel. The exterior is additionally adorned with gold and white painted vegetal and avian motifs. Alternatively, the larger is covered in a shade of espresso with a decorative design of 2 phoenixes amongst scrolling tree branches painted in shades of gold, black, and red. A pair of circular, silver handles flank the box, lying just below the lid on the longer sides, while the interior boasts a lustrous, speckled surface in tones of copper and black. Size of largest: 9.7" L x 3.8" W x 2" H (24.6 cm x 9.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition
Minor areas of loss and peeling to lacquer on smaller box, as well as some loosening to front panel. Otherwise, both are intact and excellent with great pigments and gilding.
