Description
East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa period, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A collection 7 lacquered wood and cast copper sake or sakazuki cups with badge emblems and motifs on each, most to commemorate military achievement. Several also have Japanese characters on the basin or underside of the rim that express commemoration or congratulatory remarks. The smallest wood cup has a paulownia leaf, the Japanese imperial family mark used in World War I. Included are 4 red, gold, and black lacquered wood bowls, and 3 copper bowls with a light gold wash and raised motifs- one is the Japanese Order of the Kite dating from the early 20th century, likely from the Russo Japanese War. Size of largest cup: 4.5" Diameter x 1.5" H (11.4 cm x 3.8 cm)
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition
Wear and chipping to gold wash on copper copes. Minor nicks and abrasions to lacquered wood cups. All are intact and good condition.
