East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. 1868 to 1912 CE. A stunning hand-built Satsuma ware lidded urn covered in layers of vibrant pigment and gilding detailing figural scenes on an ivory white glaze. The body rests on 4 scrolling feet, the surface just above the base is covered in a thick, textured diamond and stippled pattern. Two sides of the cuboid vessel are painted with an intricate scene of a battle and mounted samurai, and the other pair with a serene scene of elderly sages or scholars engaged in leisurely activities. The handles are formed by two ornate dragons, and the lid fits flush into the square mouth, a foo or fu dog serving as the handle with openwork Shimazu symbols below. A signature in black ink is marked on the base of this exquisite vessel. Size: 8" L x 5" W x 13.5" H (20.3 cm x 12.7 cm x 34.3 cm)
