Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting thick walls that rise to a broad, flared rim, all sitting atop a circular base. Adorned in hues of gamboge, burgundy, pine green, indigo, black, and white on a fallow-colored glaze, the interior of the elegant vessel is skillfully hand-painted with an abstract design of a flower surrounded by geometric, foliate, and vegetal motifs, while a linear pattern embellishes the rim. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Note how the foot of this example is tied with a rope for easy suspension! Size: 13.5" Diameter x 4" H (34.3 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
