Description:
Autograph Letter Signed. 4 pp.+ original stamped mailing enveloped. To his sister K.B.L.McLellan, Gorham Maine.
After writing about students and teachers who had been drafted, he adds: "...we have had a hundred different students I believe but some have been drafted and some enlisted and one has - skedaddled to Canada. Will not he be an honor to Bridgeton Academy. We have marked against his name in all the records of the Academy 'skedaddled to Canada.'"
Dodging the draft by running off to Canada was not uncommon in the North during the Civil War, though the wealthy could more legally avoid military service by paying for a "substitute" to take their place in the Army ranks.
