There was quite a number from this vicinity went to Springfield....to attend Lincoln's funeral......the last respect they could pay to our fallen
Three page letter with cover written by "Alice C. Merrill" to Harrison M. Anderson, who was serving in the 101st Illinois. The letter is dated May 7th, 1865, weeks after the assasination of President Abraham Lincoln.
Merrill writes "while we were rejoicing over the triumphs of our armies we were called upon to mourn as a nation the untimely death of our great good and noble President…treason has done its last work after he [Lincoln] allowed Lee's army to go home in peace… [Lincoln was] always lenient towards the traitors north and south, cruel indeed were they who plotted and executed the awful deed." Merrill continues "it cost the traitor [sic] his life the murdered and murderer were both rushed into eternity.....without guilt and the other all guilty. There was quite a number from this vicinity went to Springfield....to attend Lincoln's funeral......the last respect they could pay to our fallen........I sincerely hope there will be no more loss of lives Sherman's victorious raids have seen him great fame as general but his negotiations with rebel Johnson.....as they deserve disapproval from all true Patriots. Andy Johnson will negotiate with them for peace on his terms and they have to accept them, all are eagerly awaiting the return of soldier friends my brother is in the army his time expires next September he was a prisoner 6 months he's exchanged through careless mess of officers?, has not joined his regiment yet."
