Description
In 2 binders, one letter expressing grief over Abraham Lincoln's death written on April 17, 1865, many with typed or handwritten full or partial transcriptions, some with written content narratives or comments, some soldier research, several with patriotic letterhead, together with an Ichabod B. Crane signed letter, 3 bound confederate reports including a biennial financial report (1862-1863), an 1863 report listing the pardons and reprieves of prisoners, and an 1863 annual report of the Penitentiary of Virginia in Richmond, a confederate officers letter, bounty and payment documents, a list of stopped vessels and prizes, many claims of exemption, 15 unaccompanied civil war covers, a military telegraph, several unused stationary sheets, several post war letters, post war attorney correspondence, handwritten commercial receipts, a Greenville & Columbia Railroad stock certificate, etc.
The letters in varying sizes, some in multiple pages, many accompanied by their original transmittal cover, varied subject matter, binders measure 12.5x10in., in generally good condition with expected wear and varying degrees of issues given age and use.
Provenance: Part of a civil war collection of a Sullivan County, NY gentleman 90 years young. The collection spans 50 years and was acquired from shows, dealers and private collections throughout the east coast and midwest.
