Description
This letter was written by Clement Franklin (“Frank”) Goodwin (1830-1900), the son of Ebenezer Franklin Goodwin (1800-1848) and Abigail Sawyer (1804-1885) of Brownfield, Maine. In 1862, Frank was residing at No. 42 Hanson Street in Boston with his wife, Almira (“Mira”) C. (Kimball) Goodwin (1835-1920) and using his carpentry skills to make doors. On 1 September 1862, Frank stepped forward to enlist in Co. H, 43rd Massachusetts Infantry (the “Tiger Regiment”), and he remained with them until the company was mustered out on 30 July 1863 at Readville, Massachusetts. After leaving the service, Frank and his wife relocated to Chelsea, Massachusetts, where he worked as a journeyman carpenter. Letter is four pages and includes its original postal cover. Please see the fourth listed photo for a scan of the full transcription. (Description and transcription courtesy of William Griffing)
