MAINE CIVIL WAR AND RELATED MANUSCRIPT LETTERS, LOT OF 20, comprising the correspondences of Captain Jabez Greenhalgh, including an official War Department Special Order, dated May 5th, 1863, granting Captain Greenhalgh a leave of absence to escort the body of Major General Hiram Berry home following the general's death at the battle of Chancellorsville, May 3rd, 1863, and signed by Edward D. Townsend, then Assistant Adjutant General, and later Adjutant General of the U.S. Army; a letter on stationary from "Head Quarters Sickles Division," with the latter half crossed off and hand-written "3rd Corps" added, relaying the orders of Major General Sickles regarding Captain Greenhalgh's escort orders, signed by Captain LeGrand Benedict, Assistant Adjutant General, dated May 4th, 1863; and letter of recommendation from the "Head Quarters, Berry's Brigade, Kearny's Division," or the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, 3rd Corps, detailing the names, rank entitled, and exemplary service of three officers, including (then) First Lieutenant, Aide de Camp Greenhalgh for his "great gallantry at Bull Run," and at the battle of Nelsons Farm (see the Battle of Glendale, Henrico, Virginia) where "In a charge upon a rebel regiment he succeeded in driving the enemy before them and captured a beautiful stand of colors"; the collection primarily concerns Captain Greenhalgh's pension case following the war, including a letter on stationary of the Fifty-Fourth Congress, House of Representatives, Committee on Ways and Means, written and signed by the Honorable Nelson Dingley, Jr, then Maine's Representative, formerly the Governor of Maine.
