Description
Likely Confederate, manuscript letter and cut paper Valentine addressed to Miss H. R. McIntosh, from (?) H. Martin (soldier stationed at Rocky Mount, NC), February 14, 1863. Letter on 8vo leaf, 2p. Valentine 5" wide when unfolded, shaped as a heart when folded, and with poem in manuscript on front and back. Very Good. ********************* The letter thanks her for her gift, tells of his current circumstances, and ends with a request that she write soon. The Valentine reads, "Sweet Maid I often / think of thee though in a distant / land far from home and thee / When this you see remember / me though many miles / apart we be." "Feb 14 1863... a Valentine from a friend in the army while at Rocky Mount NC." A charming sentiment from a Civil War soldier to his sweetheart back home.
