Historic Staffordshire Scene Plate of the Boston State House
c. 1818 Historic Blue Staffordshire American Scene Plate: Boston State House, by John Rogers & Son, England, Choice Extremely Fine.
This lovely decorative Plate measures 6.5" in diameter and features a view of the Boston State House with cows lazing in the foreground. The Boston State House remains standing today and is an imposing edifice despite the city that has grown up around it. The cows, of course, are long gone and it is hard to imagine pastures in the inner city of Boston. This plate is in excellent condition, with no repairs or flaws save for a thin hairline visible only on the edge on the reverse. Stamped "(R)OGERS" on the back, an uneven impression of the hallmark of John Rogers & Son, prolific manufacturers of printed Staffordshire pottery and earthenware from 1814 to 1836 for sale to both the American and British markets.
The Massachusetts State House, also known as the Massachusetts Statehouse or the New State House, is the state capitol and seat of government for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, located in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston. The building houses the Massachusetts General Court (state legislature) and the offices of the Governor of Massachusetts.
The building, designed by architect Charles Bulfinch, was completed in January 1798 at a cost of $133,333 (more than five times the budget), and has repeatedly been enlarged since. It is considered a masterpiece of Federal architecture and among Bulfinch's finest works, and was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance.
