Historic Staffordshire Scene of the Boston State House Plate
c. 1818 Historic Blue Staffordshire American Scene Plate: Boston State House, by Enoch Wood & Sons of Staffordshire, England, Choice Extremely Fine.
This full size Plate measures 9.75" in diameter and features a view of the Boston State House with a horse-drawn carriage in the foreground and a lovely, floral border. Unmarked, yet known to have been produced sometime after 1818 by Enoch Wood & Sons of Staffordshire, England. This plate remains in good condition with bright colors, some typical cracking noted on the back and some minimal flaws and wear on the front (well-hidden in the designs). An impressive decorative Plate for display.
Enoch Wood (1759"1840) was an English potter and businessman, from one of the major families in Staffordshire pottery. Starting as a modeller, he established a successful business in Burslem in the Staffordshire Potteries, from 1790-1818 trading as Wood and Caldwell. In the 18th century they produced many Staffordshire figures, which Wood modelled himself, and other types of earthenware and stoneware. After 1818 his company, now Enoch Wood & Sons, produced large quantities of blue and white transfer-printed tableware in earthenware, much of which was exported to America.
The Massachusetts State House, also known as the Massachusetts Statehouse or the New State House, is the state capitol and seat of government for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, located in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston. The building houses the Massachusetts General Court (state legislature) and the offices of the Governor of Massachusetts. The building, designed by architect Charles Bulfinch, was completed in January 1798 at a cost of $133,333 (more than five times the budget), and has repeatedly been enlarged since. It is considered a masterpiece of Federal architecture and among Bulfinch's finest works, and was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance.
