Item Details
Description
Leather Bound Civil War era cdv album, 6 1/2 x 8" with inked autograph on title page of A. Lincoln and inked inscription on rear of title page reading: This old Album was in the collection of old books paper, etc. given to her companion, Wm. P. Brown by Mrs. Abraham Lincoln in 1866. Below 1866 is a penciled autograph of Wm. P. Brown (Mary Todd Lincoln's coachman, followed by inked inscrition in the same hand as above reading: The Signature is genuine Frank E. Thatcher, with ink stamp below Notary Public, Muskegon County, Mich. My Commission expires aug. 13, 1933. Wm. P. Brown was Mary Todd Lincoln's coachman. History Detectives Season 6 Episode 4, Wes Cowan. The pencil signature of Brown is real and done in 1933 and authenticated by Thatcher, but the A. Lincoln autograph is fake, quite well done fakes and only a high resolution magnification shows the pen lifts and corrections on this inked signature. This is another example of one of the largest Lincoln hoaxes of the 20th century, there are at least a hundred know examples of this hoax using various types of books, sheet music and other items from the period. Am not sure there are other period cdv photo albums. While the A. Lincoln autograph id a forgery, the albumen CDV's are not and there are seven albumen cdv's of Union soldiers, all generals except one. The generals include Lt. Gen Scott; plus Maj. Gen. Franz Sigel both with E. Anthony imprint; plus Gen. John A. Logan with imprint of J. Gurney & Son, N.Y., with 2 cent orange Internal Revenue Proprietary stamp on reverse, along with an ink autographed calling card in blue ink with John A. Logan/Gen. (this autograph is real); plus Gen. A.M. McCook with imprint of Morse's Gallery of the Cumberland, Nashville; plus Gen. A.E. Burnside, unmarked; Plus a full length seated Union soldier with nine button frock coat and slouch hat on table to left. This cdv had an autogrphed card behind with inked illegible name and R.I. (Rhode Island). The album also has an albumen photograph of A. Lincoln engraving published by G. F. Child, Washington D.C.. In addition the album contains albumen photographs of engravings of Union generals including Sherman, Sheridan, McClellan, Butler, Admiral Ferrigut, Gen. Franklin and one other. Condition album has minor wear, CDV's are Fine to Very Good.
