Description
**Originally Listed At $125**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built terracotta Colima flat figure - a type also known as a Gingerbread flat for obvious reasons - depicting a standing nude woman with scarification marks (cicatrices) on her shoulders and greatly emphasized female genitalia. The figure presents a characteristically rigid pose with her arms bent and hands placed over her chest. Though nude, she is decorated with applied necklace, earrings, and headdress. A part of the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition, she was created to accompany the deceased to the afterlife. Interestingly, scholars are still debating whether such figures represented the deceased, mourners, or deities. Size: 2.8" W x 6.1" H (7.1 cm x 15.5 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
