Description
A rare type of Pre-Columbian Colima figure distinct to the ancient Coahuayana Valley region of Colima, West Mexico, ca. 300 B.C. – 300 A.D. The form of this hollow figural vessel is that of a seated female. She is shown with both hands to her side, with ritual scarification on her shoulders, wearing ear spools, a beaded necklace and with enlarged, exposed genitalia- perhaps suggesting connotations of fertility.
This is a large and relatively rare type of Colima figure, of a type known to be distinctly found in the Coahuayana Valley region. For comparable examples of this exact type, as well as scholarly information, see “Sculpture of Ancient West Mexico”, by Kan, Meighan & Nicholson, page 141.
Dimensions: 7-3/16" in height.
