Description
Union General Ambrose Burnside Carte de Visite Signed "AE Burnside M.G." 2.5" x 4", Washington, D.C.; no date. A vignette seated portrait of the general sporting his unusual facial hair, which eventually became known as sideburns. With a Brady National Portrait Gallery backstamp. Signed at the bottom of the card. Ambrose E. Burnside (1824-1881) was a railroad executive prior to the Civil War. When the war began, he raised the 1st Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry Regiment and became colonel of the regiment. By August of 1861, he was made brigadier general and trained provisional brigades of the Army. Though he himself was popular, Burnside’s abilities on the field of battle were harshly judged by his peers and historians alike. After the war, he served as Governor of Rhode Island. Condition: Light wear to the corners and edges.
