George Washington (1789-97)Presidential Inauguration Brass Button, 1789Scarce brass coat button, issued around the time of Washington's April 30, 1789 inauguration in New York City at Federal Hall, 1 1/4 in. (32 mm). Featuring the initials "GW" at center, with the slogan "Long Live the President" along the top, famously pronounced by John Livingston after giving the oath of office. Edges and surface worn; shank on reverse wanting. Lot includes an engraved portrait of Washington, and an engraved view of Mount Vernon.
