President John Tyler ANS Re: Military Storekeepers at New York
A note entirely engrossed in the hand of John Tyler (1790-1862), sitting 10th U.S. President, and signed by him as "J Tyler" at lower right. N.p. Dated October 11, 1841. Expected light paper folds and some possible mounting traces verso visible in the top corners, else near fine. Displayed to the right of an engraved plaque and an image of Tyler after the original portrait by Alonzo Chappel. The sight size of the note is 4.375" x 7" while the overall framed size is 19.625" x 17.5" x 1.25."
John Tyler was duly inaugurated as president following the sudden death of William Henry Harrison in April 1841. Six months later, President Tyler ordered that:
"Mr Lea will cause a commission to issue to Mr George as military storekeeper at New York.
J Tyler
Oct. 11. 1841."
As President, Tyler self-identified with many strict constructionists and states’ rights Southerners, alliances which deepened sectionalism prior to the Civil War.
