Description

John Tyler Whaling Voyage Four Language Massive Ships Passport

One oversized partially printed sheet, 20.5" x 16.25". Dated "October 5, 1842", and signed by John Tyler as President "J. Tyler". Printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch. Central piece of document is missing (4.5" x 3.5"), which would have contained the Presidential seal  Light toning and expected folds with slight loss of paper along fold lines slightly affecting the "T" in Tyler. Lovely strong contrasting ink with vibrant signatures. Tyler's signature is unusually bold on this document.  The document has two areas of paper loss. The first is a central location about 4.5" x 3.5", which would have contained the Presidential seal, the second area of loss removed the signature of the Secretary of State signature and is about 4" x 1.5", The Presidential signature remains unaffected and bold.  Both areas of loss are patched on the verso.

This passport, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch authorizes passage of "Joseph R. Taber", master or commander of the "Joseph Meigs", of the burden of "338 +89/95 tons of thereabouts … lying at the present port of Mattapoisett, bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with provisions, stores and Utensils for a Whaling voyage …"
