Item Details
Description
A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS MANUSCRIPT, LAW ENFORCEMENT CERTIFICATE OF MEDICAL CARE RENDERED AFTER BATTERY, WILLIAM S. TAYLOR, DEPUTY SHERIFF, SIGNED, E. J. ARNOLD, PHYSICIAN, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, SEPTEMBER 18TH 1838, hand-inscribed ink on paper, "Montgomery County, Sept. 18th, 1838, Peter Blanchard to E.J. Arnold, Dr. August 12: To visit & medicine for servant girl battery - $5.00; 14th - $5.00; 15th - $5.00; [Total] $15.00.," and below in the sheriff's handwriting, "I Certify that the above service was rendered the girl during her sickness. William S. Taylor, Dept. Sheriff." 6 3/8" x 7 7/8" Note: Unmentioned in the Texas State Historical Association biography on William Stanhope Taylor (1819-1869), the present document indicates he served as a Deputy Sheriff of Montgomery county in 1838. In the present document, William S. Taylor certifies that Montgomery County's first physician, Dr. E.J. Arnold, visited to tend to and treat a "servant girl" after suffering from the wounds of battery for approximately four days. The second day skipped, but the doctor returns on the third and fourth day. An unusual remnant and evidence of a collaboration between law enforcement and medicine to foster social work in the early Republic of Texas. The present manuscript documents the response from both parties to the victim; the frontier life in Texas a perilous landscape for the most vulnerable, this ephemera is a remnant of Texas' historic pursuit of justice. Provenance: Estate of Dr. Paul E. Shutts, Houston, Texas.
