After studying law, he worked for Gambetta's French Republic, where he was chief of staff. Elected deputy for Digne in 1889, he was re-elected in 1893. He led a vigorous campaign against General Boulanger and fought for a review of the Dreyfus trial. Joseph Reinach thanks his correspondent for sending one of his writings and the dedication that accompanies it; He impatiently awaits the second part of Lavertujon's work which promises the solution of a historical enigma which has always preoccupied him, etc... ... the diagram that you give in facsimile must relate to the speech that Gambetta gave tried to pronounce on August 24, 1870. The stenographic report gives this indication: "Le bruit couvre la voix de l'orateur qui, ne pouvant plus se faire entendre, descend de l'estrade"... Il ressort clairement des quelques mots que Gambetta a pu prononcer ce jour-lˆ, qu'il avait en tte un grand discours..." etc.
