Davis, verso no. 24 Davis vs. Chance & Coles and payment notes in pencil. 9 5/8" x 7 7/8" Facsimile Transcription: "On the first day of January next we promise to pay J.J. Davis or bearer six hundred and fifty dollars for value. Read this 14th January 1839. (signed) J.B. Chance (signed) John P. Coles. Whereas the above note was executed for the hire of three negro servants (viz). Abraham, George and Peggy for term of the present year I bind & oblige my self to furnish said servants with two suits of coarse clothes, one of which is to be suitable for winter, one coarse wool hat and two pairs of coarse shoes and one good corse negro blanket and any failing to furnish whole, or any part of the above articles I promise to pay to the said Davis in equivalent to that money.
