"Uncle Tom's Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly" by Harriet Beecher Stowe, published by John P. Jewett, 1852, set by Hobart & Robbins, printed by Geo. C. Rand, First Edition. "1852" is imprinted on the bottom of the title page. Complete in two volumes. Both volumes are from the same early printing- 70th thousand [May 1852]; illustrated with six full page plates. The inscription on the front endpaper of the first volume is dated July 6th 1852.
Hard boards, collector's leather binding with gold vignette on the front boards (some wear: see photo]; 5" x 8", photos]; 312 + 322 pages + 6 engraved plates + publisher's catalog at the end of the second volume, some soiling, a few pages have an edge wear, a few pages have corner folds, tight binding; very good condition.
Perhaps the most influential work of American literature and a cornerstone of 19th century literature.
The first printing was issued in March and consisted of The 5,000 copies. The 3000 copies were sold on the first day of issue, the complete printing was reportedly sold out in a few days. The second printing of 5000 sold out by the end of March. On May 15, 1852 fifty-thousand copies of the first edition were sold. Before the summer was out sales had topped the hundred thousand mark. Until the end of the year 300,000 copies were sold.
