A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS MANUSCRIPT, SAM HOUSTON, SIGNED, APPOINTMENT OF PHYSICIAN WILLIAM M. SHEPHERD AS SECRETARY OF THE NAVY OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS, HOUSTON, AUGUST 13, 1837, hand-inscribed ink on Hudson watermarked cream laid paper affixed with wax and relief paper star seal with red ribbon, sent from the "Archival Department, Republic of Texas," in Houston, Sam Houston writes from the archives he had recently relocated to Houston, to Dr. William M. Shepherd, "You will assume the duties of Secretary of the Navy of the Republic of Texas and discharge them with further orders. I have the honor to be your most obedient servant, Sam Houston." 7 1/4" x 8" Provenance: Estate of Dr. Paul E. Shutts, Houston, Texas.
Condition
Some losses at right, smudges, stains, deterioration of ribbon, creases as issued, "Archival" in part lost on return address, but overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age.
