A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS MANUSCRIPT, SAM HOUSTON, SIGNED, APPOINTMENT OF DR. JAMES AENEAS E. PHELPS AS SURGEON OF THE TEXAS ARMY AND PAY EXTENSION, COLUMBIA, DECEMBER 5, 1836 - APRIL 27, 1838, hand-inscribed ink on paper fragment, both sides signed, "Sam Houston," the first-term President of Texas writes, "Doctr. Phelps was appointed by me as Sr. Surgeon on the 1st of April 1836 and as such, acted under me until the 5th of May following, Columbia, T., 5th Dec. 1836.," and verso an update, "Let this be amended for three months pay only.," signed with flourish, "Sam Houston, 27th April 1838." 4 1/8" x 8" Provenance: Estate of Dr. Paul E. Shutts, Houston, Texas.
Condition
Some tears at corners, stains, mild toning, and ink bleed, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age.
