Description
1864 Robinson Crusoe Adventures Defoe SIGNED Gov. of Ohio Follansbee Noyes

“It is never too late to be wise.”

? Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe

“One of the most beautiful travel books in figures of the eighteenth century.” (Gumuchian)

Called the original adventure novel, Robinson Crusoe was originally published in 1719 and depicts the life of a castaway who learns to survive on an island for decades. However, while it saw substantial success with the masses, there were still those that were not impressed. Charles Dickens said,

“...Robinson Crusoe should be the only instance of a universally popular book that could make no one laugh and could make no one cry.”

This charming American edition was published in New York by Blakeman and Mason and features both full-page and in-text illustrations throughout. While the work itself is desirable, this particular example is noteworthy for including the provenance of Governor Edward Follansbee Noyes, the 30th governor of Ohio. It includes his signature in the front pastedown.

Governor Edward Follansbee Noyes (1832–1890) was an American soldier, judge, politician, and the 30th governor of Ohio. During the Civil War, he helped organize the 39th Ohio Infantry, and was rewarded with a commission as its first major. He was severely wounded during the Atlanta Campaign in 1864 and, as a result, had his left leg amputated. Three months later, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker assigned Noyes, who was still recuperating and using crutches, to the command of Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, and breveted him as a brigadier general. He later served as Rutherford B. Hayess Minister to France from 1877 to 1881.
