Description
A Nootka Pictorial Twined Basket c. 1895 cedar, natural and dyed bear grass Nootka basketry items are very often decorated with embroidered images of whaling scenes – not surprising given the fact that whaling is essential to the life of the Nootka, who reside on the west coast of Vancouver Island. As well, the flag appears on numerous baskets from this area – an indication of the importance this US symbol retained for the natives. The seven depictions of the American flag on this lidded basket are well executed, and are especially interesting on the circular form. Exhibited: North by Southwest, The Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, Tallahassee, FL, 2010 Diameter: 5 ¼ inches
