Description
1826 Native American Indians Indian Affairs Treaties Laws Regulations Washington
A very rare and interesting early compilation of treaties with various Native American tribes during the Federal era. Of note is a Cherokee alphabet translated by George Guess Sequoyah and a quotation from Thomas McKenney ordering 150 copies of the book for the Department of Indian Affairs.
It is only one of 150 original copies created under the orders of the department of war in 1826. This is a museum quality piece with essential early history of The United States. It contains significant contemporary perspective on treaties with Native American tribes. This would complement significant collections such as those at Yale Law School and the exhibition at the University of Michigan.
Indian Treaties, and Laws and Regulations Relating to Indian Affairs, to which is added an appendix containing the proceedings of the old congress, and other important state papers, in relation to Indian Affairs.
Compiled and published under orders of the Department of War of the 9th February and 6th October 1825.
Washington City, Way & Gideon, Washington City. 1826.
