GEORGE BUSHOTTER 4 pc Native American Indian Artwork Letter. Important Historicl records. 2 colored pencil Bushotter drawings during time at Hampton Institute. One is 'Man Trying to Kill Buffalo', other 'These Man are Been to Fight'. 1919 letter explains provenance and Bushotter's connection to Hampton Institute. Envelope dated 1919. Both are signed and dated 1880. George Bush Otter. George was an important figure, documenting indian life for the Smithsonian Institute. George was a full-blooded Teton Sioux. He was born at the forts of Owl Creek in what was then the Dakota Territory.George was also known as Oteri (Trouble). He was a graduate of Hampton Institute in 1881 and the first Lakota Ethnographer.George was the son of Grey (Whirlwind) Goodroad and her first husband, an Ihanktunwan (Yankton) Sioux. On his marriage certificate, George gives the name of his father as Amos Goodroad. Amos was his step-father. George's mother was a Mnikhowoju (Minneconjou) Sioux. George's father was killed by White men as the family was traveling down to Yankton country in Missouri when George was a young boy. Whirlwind then married Amos Goodroad. Amos was from the Lower Brule reservation in South Dakota.When George entered school at the Hampton Institute in 1878, his name was given as George Bush, Oteri. This was both his English and Lakota names. They became amalgamated by school officials into George Bushotter. For the rest of his life, George signed his name as George Bushotter, Oteri.George married Evelina (Hull) Bushotter ["Lina"](5 July 1853 - 17 Nov 1946) on 8 Mar 1888 in Hedgesville, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
