DOHNA-SCHLODIEN NIKOLAUS: (1879-1956) Nikolaus Burggraf und Graf zu Schlodien. German naval Officer and Author. Best-known as the war hero Commander of the Möwe. Nikolaus Graf Dohna-Schlodien was one of only two German officers of World War I who received the highest military awards of the five main German states. A rare and attractive 3.5 x 5.5 postcard signed by Dohna-Scholdien, the Verlag image showing Dohna-Scholdien in a three quarter length pose, wearing his navy military uniform. Signed `Graf Dohna´ in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area at the base of the image. EX £120-180 In 1915, after the outbreak of World War I, Dohna-Schlodien was given the command of the renamed SMS Mowe. Through his success as commander, and together with his crew, they became popular war heroes, with over twenty ships sank, like the crews of Wolf commanded by Karl Nerger, or the Seeadler commanded by Felix von Luckner. Dohna-Sclodien was later appointed naval adjutant to the German Emperor Wilhelm II.
