Description
CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. A wartime T.L.S., Winston S. Churchill, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 25th July 1943, to Captain G. S. Elliston, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister. Churchill thanks his correspondent for their letter 'and for the Official Report of the proceedings in the Guildhall on June 30'. Accompanied by the original envelope. Together with a T.L.S. by J. F. V. Woodman, Clerk of the Chamberlain's Court, one page, 4to, Gresham Street, London, 22nd June 1943, to Captain G. S. Elliston, stating, in part, 'The Chamberlain desires me to enquire whether you are willing to attend on the occasion of Mr. Winston Churchill's admission to the Freedom and be one of the Compurgators to vouch for his loyalty, respectability &c.' and also including a small selection of printed ephemera including a printed 4to programme of Arrangements for the Ceremony of the Presentation of the Freedom of the City of London to Churchill in the Guildhall, 30th June 1943, two partially printed tickets of admission to the presentation, bearing the facsimile signature of Elliston in his capacity as Chairman of the City Lands Committee and issued to his wife and Miss. Angela Elliston, etc. One file hole to the upper left corner of Churchill's letter and with some extremely light, minor age wear, generally VG, 6 £1000-1500 Captain Sir George Sampson Elliston (1875-1954) British Politician, Member of Parliament for Blackburn 1931-45. Elliston became a Member of the Corporation of the City of London in 1929 and became Chief Commoner in 1943. It was in this capacity that he submitted to the Court of Common Council a resolution conferring the Honorary Freedom of the City of London on Churchill.
