Description

**First Time At Auction**

Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely carved wooden figural "food hook," possibly a female, with red, yellow, cream, and white painted details. The figure stands upon delineated legs, has her hands held to her hips, a slightly-distended abdomen perhaps indicative of pregnancy, and a twisted cord wrapped around her slender waist. The entire figure is perched atop a two-pronged hook with an eye-like design in the center that calls to mind the ceremonial items of the yam festivals that this area is known for. Elaborate hooks like this one were used to preserve food, both by hanging them and by calling upon the spirit they believe is within them to slow spoilage. Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 25.5" H (64.8 cm); 28.25" H (71.8 cm) on included custom stand.
