Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik, Abelam, early 20th century CE. A hand-made wood and feather whisk with an intricately carved handle and a generous array of cassowary feathers for swatting flies. The butt end of the handle is carved with incised curving rings that encircle each other. At the center are two slit perforations that create a balanced arrangement. Below is a short neck that is encircled with incised triangular motifs. The feathers are attached to the neck area of the handle with a fiber cord that wraps several times around to secure them in place. The overall shape of the whisk is like a western style of feather duster. This whisk was perfect for swatting at pesky flies or other biting insects, and the ornate handle may be symbolic of a tribe or family. Size: 28.75" L (73 cm)
Provenance: private Northern California, USA Collection; ex-Greg and Michael Hamson collection
