Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sentani tribe, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved and expertly polished greenstone celt of ritual form that exhibits a conical handle, an expanding midsection, and a sharpened, semicircular blade edge. Scholars believe celts have ceremonial connotations, however unblemished celts like this example were perhaps used in funerary contexts. Size: 8.375" L x 2.5" W x 1.125" H (21.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 2.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995

Minor nicks and abrasions, otherwise intact and excellent. Great surface smoothness, and blade edge is still relatively sharp.
