North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Pre-Contact Period, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A thick discoidal that was hand-pecked and polished from a volcanic stone for use in a game known as 'ulu maika. This rolling / throwing game was one of the most popular forms of entertainment and in Hawaii and is often compared to modern day bowling, it was played on a pitch known as a kahuamaika. The objective was to roll the stones as close as possible to a pair of wooden stakes, the most points were awarded to stones landing between the two stakes. Size: 3.75" Diameter x 1.5" W (9.5 cm x 3.8 cm)
