Description
South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved stone game piece for a native Hawaiian game known as 'Ulu maika. The circular stone (known as an 'ulu) has smooth peripheries for rolling purposes and slightly convex faces so the stone would remain at rest in the soft earth. Ulu maika was one of the most popular games in early Hawaii, as it brought large groups together in a amicable contest. It a game of skill where players roll stones toward a pair of wooden stakes, and the winners are decided upon by a number of factors including the proximity of the stone to the stakes, the furthest throw, and others.
