Description
North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. 19th century CE. A fabulous mortar, skillfully hand-carved from creamy sandstone and presenting smooth, sturdy walls that rise to a slightly conical body and a thick, circular rim over a shallow basin, all sitting upon a flat base. This mortar would have been used with a wooden or stone pestle to make traditional medicines or to grind dye or food. Size: 3.625" in diameter x 3.125" H (9.2 cm x 7.9 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.
