Description
North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A hand-carved hand chisel or adze blade of a hefty and sturdy form with a trapezoidal body, a slightly raised handle, and a sharpened blade edge. The surfaces both above and below the blade edge are incredibly smooth as a result of repeated use and indicates that this was a utilitarian tool rather than a ceremonial or funerary carving. Adzes are called "ko'i" in Polynesia, and it seems they were traded widely; indeed, axes from Hawaii have been found thousands of miles away in what is now French Polynesia, demonstrating the incredible skill of Polynesian navigators. Size: 5.9" L x 1.4" W (15 cm x 3.6 cm)
