Description
North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 18th century or earlier CE. An impressive and large mortar carved from a porous volcanic stone exhibiting mottled hues of taupe and grey. Presenting a triangular form, the mortar rests on a flat base with thick walls that rise to a rounded rim displaying 3 corners. The interior basin is shallow and slightly conical in shape from use, with smoother surfaces near the edges from pounding. This mortar would have been used with a wooden or stone pestle to make traditional medicines or to grind dye or food. Size: 9" L x 6.75" W x 3.25" H (22.9 cm x 17.1 cm x 8.3 cm)
