Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A stunning pendant hand-carved from blue-green stone in the form of 2 crouching jaguars facing opposite directions with a zoomorphic head, perhaps of a bird, lizard, or deity, positioned between them. An annular drill hole near the center allows for this ornament to be suspended and worn as a pendant. Jaguar imagery symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world; hence, warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. Size: 3.8" L x 2.7" W (9.7 cm x 6.9 cm)
