Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. Carved from a stone of sage green hues, an anthropomorphic/avian axe god, the lower section a nice celt form, the upper section representing a visage (perhaps human) wearing a bird headdress representing a perky bird denizen of the Costa Rican rainforest with a delineated beak and crest. In the Pre-Columbian World, birds were regarded as animals of the celestial realm that served as messengers between humankind and their deities. Laterally drilled behind the beak for suspension or attachment. Size: 4" H (10.2 cm)
