Description

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, eastern Big Island, Kalapana, Black Sand Beach, Pre-Contact Period, ca. 18th century CE or earlier. A hand-carved basalt hand tool known as an adze with a trapezoidal head, a sturdy body, and a raised handle emanating off the verso. The blade head is tapered to accommodate the sharpened edge which would have been a useful tool whether in one's hand or attached to the end of a wooden pole. Adzes are called "ko'i" in Polynesia, and it seems they were traded widely; indeed, axes from Hawaii have been found thousands of miles away in what is now French Polynesia, demonstrating the incredible skill of Polynesian navigators. Size: 5.6" L x 1.5" W (14.2 cm x 3.8 cm)

Condition

Nicks and chips commensurate with age, with softening to blade edge, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to overall form. Presumably modern orange pigment on topside, and old find site information label beneath base.
