Item Details
Description
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Suku people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is an enormous ceremonial Suku mask made of wood and raffia fibers then painted a striking blue and white. The visage is comprised of a large knob as the chin, a mouth with a square hole, and nostrils cut just below the nose for the wearer to see through. Matching bumps adorn the cheeks, and forward set ears flank the bulging, slit-form eyes which create a trance-like gaze. The broad forehead has blue linear brows painted atop the chalky white ground, and a deliberate triangular section to the brow is unpainted. The periphery of the wood is pierced for the raffia attachments, and the verso has a large, woven, net-like attachment for securing the mask to the wearer. The size of the mask indicates it was likely a piece that covered the whole body with the top projecting over the wearer's head. Size: 6" L x 20" W x 42" H (15.2 cm x 50.8 cm x 106.7 cm)
