Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
South Africa, Tanzania or Mozambique, Makua peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful ceremonial mask hand-carved from wood with simple and naturalistic features. The visage is formed with soft and rounded forms such as slightly recessed and circular drilled eyes, protruding nose, smoothed cheeks, and a slit formed mouth. Two ears project at the sides and two perforations on the ears were perhaps for suspension straps. The small size and soft features give the impression of a youth or child. This type of mask was made to be tilted back on the top of the head and worn in a ritual dance. The wood has been blackened with pigments and has great signs of use and patina! Size: 7.75" L x 5.375" W (19.7 cm x 13.7 cm); 10.5" H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA
