Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine, hand-carved section from a wooden canoe prow in the form of a double-headed fish, the center part of its body consisting of several arches and round bosses. The fish are gape-mouthed, their bodies carved with deeply incised lines and studded with bulging eyes. The item seems to have once been painted a bright white based on some remaining pigment on its surface. The rugged terrain of Papua New Guinea means that the easiest form of travel for its native indigenous inhabitants is via dugout canoe, especially in the region around the long inland Sepik River. Canoes were highly decorated with symbols of clans and emblems for safety, speed, and success. Size: 2.35" L x 30" W x 5" H (6 cm x 76.2 cm x 12.7 cm); 5.45" H (13.8 cm) on included custom stand.
